There have been growing shreds of evidence that vitamin D can be beneficial in the battle against COVID19. Many studies have confirmed that vitamin D supplements can reduce the risk of severe COVID19 disease. Considering the findings of these studies, the government has decided to distribute vitamin D supplements among elderly people and those who are at a higher risk of COVID19. Care home residents, who have been dealing with conditions such as cancer, will be given enough supplies of the vitamin in the upcoming four months. The first batch of the vitamin will reach them early next month. This decision has come after; Health Secretary Matt Hancock has decided to take a notice of growing evidence regarding the benefits of vitamin D in the COVID19 pandemic.

A recent study has shown that nearly 80 percent of patients with severe COVID19, who have been admitted to the hospital, has been identified with vitamin D deficiency. Representatives of the government hope that a higher uptake of vitamin D, combined with effective treatment and a vaccine might end the need for rolling lockdowns in the UK. The officials have claimed that direct delivery of vitamin supplies at the doorsteps of people will help eradicate the deficiency. It will as well regulate calcium levels in the bloodstream of the patients keeping bones and muscles healthy. The officials have claimed that with this new program everyone in need will be able to access the supply of vitamins, which will last throughout this winter. Several studies claim that vitamin D can be essential for those as well who are dealing with COVID19.

This initiative will come along with the clinical trials of further review links between vitamin D and the SARS-CoV-2 virus. People who are dealing with cancer, acute respiratory conditions such as severe asthma, cystic fibrosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease will receive free supplies of the vitamin. People who have gone through organ transplants as well are entitled to free supplies of the supplement. Vitamin D is a type of hormone, which is produced by the kidneys. It helps main the calcium levels in the bloodstream. It directly affects the immune system.
