Taco Bell is working on expanding its vegetarian menu. This is why the fast-food chain is experimenting with its own proprietary vegan meat. The meat is being made from chickpea and pea blend. A company spokesperson said that vegan meat will be a substitute option for seasoned beef. The will be a substitute for any menu item at no extra charge. However, the no extra charge facility will be available only during the test. The new alternative meat will be initially sold at the Southern California location during the test run. It has been as the Cravetarian.

Offered in Cravetarian Taco, it will be made with lettuce, shredded cheddar cheese, tomatoes, and sour cream. The crunchy item will be then served in a corn shell. It will be almost similar to the original Crunchy Taco Supreme. The fast-food chain’s Southern California location will start selling this from April 29. The item will be on sale till the supplies last. There are chances that it would be expanded to other chains across the country. Taco Bell is the latest entry to the list of chains that are ramping up alternative meat efforts. It must be noted that the company is already working on a separate alternative protein with Beyond Meat.

There are several other fast-food chains like White Castle, Dunkin’, Pizza Hut, Burger King, and Del Taco which have partnered with plant-based meat makers for menu items. Impossible Foods is one of the plant-based meat makers. Taco Bell chief executive officer Mark King had already made it clear that the chain would be embracing alternative proteins. Later, the company said that it would try to highlight its own vegetarian options. These fast-food chains are opting for meat alternatives as the market is growing exponentially all around the world. Those who are in the making of alternative meat are already planning big with Impossible Foods announcing that it would go for public listing soon.
